One Earth, One Chance

April 22 serves to remind everyone globally that the Earth needs us. Earth Day encourages people to act, come together and be responsible. As the Earth’s climate worsens and natural areas vanish, Earth Day 2025 encourages all of us to help make the world more healthy and sustainable.

The Story of Earth Day through the Years

On April 22, 1970, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day, which was first celebrated in America. It was established to educate people about pollution and the quick action needed to keep our natural resources safe. Since that initial Earth Day, more than 1 billion individuals in over 190 nations have participated in Earth Day events, making it the most powerful environmental movement around the world.

This year’s theme for Earth Day is “Planet vs. Plastics.”

This year’s message, “Planet vs. Plastics,” points out the big issue of plastic pollution. It’s estimated that each year, many millions of tonnes of plastic pollution contaminate our oceans and impact marine animals. In 2025, Earth Day urges nations worldwide to cut plastic production by 60% by the year 2040 and focus on using sustainable methods and holding companies accountable. The issue is bigger than clearing up — it’s about changing our habits when we consume.

The Earth plays a very small role in the great universe. Earth, as seen from space, is a simple “pale blue dot,” not to be replaced or ignored. What Sagan wrote teaches us to be humble and considerate toward the only planet we have.

Earth Day isn’t only a show of support — it helps the world see the real risks to the environment. It doesn’t matter if you’re in school, working or leading, what you do counts. We all inhabit Earth and we all must do our part to guide its care. Because there isn’t another Planet B.
