Work – a photo exhibition
The exhibition ‘Work’ by the students of Pondicherry University MA Mass Communication 1st year, was held at Exhibition House, Goubert avenue (near Gandhi Statue) from 30 October to 4 November.
The photographs in the selection portray people involved in different kinds of work. Children studying, playing, young girls supporting their families, working women and men. For most, work is life, and life is work. An attempt was made to document the ordinary workers and their struggle for livelihood.
For many, working conditions are harsh and difficult. Even after working so hard, they are deprived from having their basic needs and human rights. In the process of meeting people from different walks of life with our cameras, we learnt about photography, documentary photography, photojournalism, photo editing and curating a photo exhibition.
Most importantly, their exercise made the students step out of their comfort zones and experience the socio economic reality of people’s lives, so different from ours.
These photographs are the result of the photojournalism workshop conducted by Navroze Contractor and facilitated by Gopinath S. and Radhika Khanna, with guidance by Nicolas Joffroy.
