World Oceans Day

The World Oceans day, which is observed every year on 8 June was proposed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil by Canada in the year 1992. Since then it has been celebrated unofficially all over the world until 2008, when it was officially recognized by United Nations. The Oceans Project and the World Ocean Network has successfully coordinated the event with growing success and global participation.

WODOceans are an integral part of global ecosystem. It provides the largest habitat for the marine aquatic life, trade routes between different countries, varied types of seafood and not to forget the role of ocean currents in influencing the weather of the world. The world oceans day celebrates the importance of oceans and the many marine products that it gives us.

The growing pollution and the over exploitation of the marine life has resulted in deterioration of the ecological balance of the ocean systems around the world. The Oceans Project and World Ocean Network have been promoting the cause of saving the oceans through various activities like beach clean ups, educational programmes, cultural programmes, film festivals etc on World Oceans Day. Each year a theme is chosen as a cause of celebration and this year the theme is “Together we have the power to protect the ocean.”

Today let us join hands to raise awareness and promote personal and community action to develop a more sustainable society and a healthy ocean.
