Maasi Magam: a photo story
Maasi Magam is an auspicious Hindu festival celebrated in early spring when the asterism Magha falls in the Tamil month of Masi (February-March).
Idols of Vishnu, Shiva and Shakti are taken from their sanctum from the temples of Pondicherry for a procession which ends with the ritual of immersion in the sea. People gather in thousands to celebrate the festive occasion of Maasi Magam. According to legend, those who, alongside the Gods and Goddesses, take bath in the sea, attain Moksha.
Maasi Magam is a popular festival in Pondicherry, Kumbakonam and Srirangam and also in other places in Tamil Nadu with shrines of Vishnu, Shiva and Shakti. It is an occasion where the streets get packed with people selling homemade craft items, pottery, toys among other things.
