Like hundreds of thousands of sports fans in India, the students of Pondicherry University have also been gripped by the World Cup fever.

Cricket enthusiasts are geared up for the extravaganza which is being hosted here in the sub-continent. The hostel inmates have made certain preparations to watch the live action: two television sets, one in Ilango Adigal Hostel and the other in Abul Kalam Azad Hostel have become the hot spots for students to hangout. The students have collected an amount of Rs10/- from every room in their hostels in order to pay for the Dish T.V. connections to watch the matches live on ESPN and STARSPORTS.

Even though students are uncertain about the external exams in the wake of elections in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry – because of which exams may be preponed – they still want to watch the big event of the cricket world.

Some students have even booked tickets for the matches that will be played in Chennai. Abhishek Kumar, a 1st. M.A. Mass Communication student, is one such cricket buff who has bought tickets for Rs500/- along with his friends well in advance for the South Africa versus India match. “Cricket is my passion,” he says, “Watching a match in a stadium with a big crowd is really a childhood dream come true,” he adds on.
