by Ynez and Abinash KK
The 134th birth anniversary of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar was celebrated by Pondicherry University at the DEMMC on April 15. The School of Media’s PhD scholars organized the event to remember Dr. Ambedkar and his vision towards a unified society.
The main feature was the engaging address given by Mr. Muthuvelu Ramamurthi, the associate editor of Ekalaivan Magazine and a well-known Dalit activist. His talk was on “Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s vision of equality and its constitutional reflections.”
The event started with a thought-provoking quote: “Caste isn’t division of labour; it is division of labourers”. Mr. Ramamurthi explained at length Dr. Ambedkar’s philosophies, his influence on the writing of the Indian constitution, and the ongoing effort to end discrimination in India.
At the beginning, the program provided a brief overview of Ambedkar’s life, his extensive efforts in social reform, law, and the architecture of the Indian constitution. Supporters spoke repeatedly about his dedication to removing caste injustice and supporting liberty, equality, and fraternity.
Along with staff and students, Dean Prof. Sevukan handed flowers to the portrait of Dr. Ambedkar. Several people said that caste-based problems continue to exist in today’s world. Many presenters explained how his message showed why teaching is still important today, many also noting the ongoing problem of caste and the need for it to change society.
Mr. Ramamurthi pointed out that caste inequality appears in education, workplaces, and political systems. Dr. Ambedkar’s thoughts on caste violence by pointing out an incident in Tamil Nadu, showing everyone the importance of his teachings in present-day life.
Dr. Ambedkar brought the event to a close with his respected message, “Educate, Agitate, Organize.” The organizers and students told us that Ambedkar Jayanti should encourage us to talk about these matters and spread awareness all the time.
