Pondicherry University Hosts Tree Plantation Event, Advancing Efforts for a Greener Future
Pondicherry University organised a remarkable tree plantation event on January 3, 2025 at the Silver Jubilee Campus, to foster environmental awareness and ecological balance on campus. The ceremony was inaugurated by Shri K. Kailashnathan, IAS (Retd.), the Hon’ble Lt. Governor of Puducherry and Chief Rector of the University as a Chief Guest. Several distinguished guests and university officials, including Shri P.M.L. Kalyanasundaram, Hon’ble Member of the Legislative Assembly (Kalapet), Prof. K. Tharanikkarasu, Vice Chancellor (i/c), and Dr. Arulrajan, IFS, Conservator of Forest-cum-Chief Wildlife Warden, Government of Puducherry, joined the plantation drive.
One of the Executive Committee Members of the Green Campus and Special Officer for the Green Campus, Dr. Mathimaran Natarajan contributed substantially in planning the event and the drive of the conservation. The event sought to mitigate the impact of Cyclone Fengal which uprooted 104 trees, thereby increasing the biodiversity on campus.
Prof. Clement S. Lourdes, Director (C&CR), and Prof. Rajneesh Bhutani, Registrar (i/c), were also present on the occasion. Tree planting event, alongside the immediate importance of enhancing green cover on the campus, was also part of the university’s plans for the future of a sustainable and green campus framework. The newly planted trees would play a remarkable role in improving air quality and growing the green cover on the campus.
The event saw the participation of several students including from the Department of Electronic Media and Mass Communication, Pondicherry University. The students actively participated by planting saplings with their Head of Department (i/c), Dr. Radhika Khanna.
The event also witnessed energetic sloganeering aimed to promote environmental awareness. This collective effort was a manifestation of the university’s spirit of collaboration among students, staff members and faculty for a purpose.
