Visual Storytelling Workshop by EMRC Inspires Aspiring Photojournalists
The Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMRC) Local Chapter, in collaboration with the Department of Electronic Media and Mass Communication, organised a Visual Storytelling Photojournalism Workshop on October 29, 2024. The three-hour workshop was conducted by Mr. Pattabi Raman, a former senior photojournalist with the New Indian Express. This workshop was in connection with the Photojournalism SWAYAM MOOC course created and managed by Dr. Radhika Khanna, the Head (i/c) of the Department of Electronic Media and Mass Communication and Director (i/c) of EMRC.
Pattabi Raman is currently working as an independent photojournalist and documentary photographer based in Puducherry, India. He is a human rights photography fellow of the prestigious Magnum Foundation, New York, and specialises in documenting socio-economic, cultural, and environmental issues.
During the workshop, he engaged the audience with anecdotes from his career, sharing his projects and the stories behind those photographs. His projects on the Sri Lankan crisis, the salt plains of Rann of Kutch, and other human interest stories were particularly influential and moving.
The audience included students from Pondicherry University, neighbouring colleges, and those enrolled in the photojournalism MOOC course as online participants. Mr. Raman reviewed the photo story projects created by first-year M.A. Mass Communication students as part of their coursework. He also provided constructive feedback that was helpful for their improvement and also praised their work, noting that it was among the best he had seen recently.
